An iconic building in many ways, Sidrah is strategically located at the corner of Swami Vivekananda (SV) Road – the main arterial road running right though the suburbs of Mumbai City – and 8th Road in the suburb of Khar (West).

Sidrah, meaning a fruit bearing tree in Heaven, stands on one of the earliest two plots bought from the erstwhile Bombay Municipal Corporation under the Khar (West) development scheme. This location was purchased by the late Mrs. and Mr. Dilawar Hussain, jointly with their son the late Salahuddin Saifullah, way back in 1932. The other location was bought by Mrs. Dilawar Hussain’s brother. It wasn’t until 1948, however, that the owners took up the construction of an elegant bungalow, adding a first floor in 1968. Mrs and Mr Hussain, along with their son and his wife Raihana, lived here for over thirty five years with their family of three sons.

With the addition of the first floor, the family moved upstairs while letting out the ground floor to the Bank of Maharashtra.

The house proved extremely lucky for the Saifullah family – as it did for the Bank of Maharashtra, whose branch in the premises experienced phenomenal growth beyond expectations. The three sons of the family also met with great success. The eldest, Late Zafar Saifullah, topped the IAS in 1958 and went on to become Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India, among numerous other high-level bureaucratic posts. The second son, Late Al-haj Ahmed Saifullah, was commissioned into the Air Force, rising to the rank of Wing Commander, before joining the fledgling Jet Airways, where he continues to serve as Senior General Manager in charge of Corporate Affairs. The youngest son, Mr. Aminuddin Saifullah, was among the earliest graduates of IIM Kolkata, and has had a brilliant career in various frontline companies in the country, such as Shaw Wallace, the Oberoi Group, and others.

In the year 2006, the brothers decided to redevelop the old bungalow, and worked together to build up in its place the magnificent structure, keeping with the family’s historical background and refined aesthetics. Sidrah has thus become a distinctive landmark along the prestigious commercial avenue of SV Road in the Khar (West) suburb of Mumbai.
